Sexual Reproductive Health Nutrition And Rights

Improving SRH, HIV and Nutrition outcome among adolescent girls and boys in Zanzibar.

The program started in 2021 and has been implemented both at lower secondary schools and at the community in all 11 districts of Zanzibar. Its aim to increase access to participatory community and school-based learning and action initiatives on SRH, HIV, violence prevention, nutrition and rights of adolescent girls and boys particularly marginalized and vulnerable groups.

Almost 8 lower primary schools and 50% of communities /Shehia from each of 11districts are reached with SRH, HIV and Nutrition peer education program. 1850 (1144F, 706M) Youth Peer Educators (YPEs)aged 15 to 24 were trained and assigned to rollout peer education sessions to adolescent girls and boys aged 10 to 19 year. 

YPEs receiving ongoing mentorship through the Community Health Volunteers (CHV) and collaborate on the issue of identification and support referral to nearby health centre or Youth Friendly Centres (YFS). Adolescents meet in a group; each YPE established two groups/clubs with age appropriate of 10-14 and 15-19yrs, 30members per group. In addition, the program targeted to reach 110,000 (66000F, 44000M) adolescent girls and boys in Zanzibar by the year 2024. 

Up to January 2023, the total of 93,018(49813F, 43205M) adolescent girls and boys were reached. The program implemented in partnership with UNICEF, UNFPA under the “Girls Reproductive Health, Rights and Empowerment Accelerated in Tanzania (GRREAT)” initiative.
