Education on HIV Prevention and Care

A project to strengthen HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment for People living with HIV/AIDS in Zanzibar.

This project is funded by the AMREF organization for five years and it is envisaged to end by the end of the year 2023. The main goal of the project is to provide peer education to PLHIV to encourage the strengthening of HIV prevention and care to People PLHIV. The project involves 28 peer educators working in 12 CTCs in Unguja and Pemba.

in these centers peers are performing different tasks that support good adherence, these includes, provision  of peer education sessions, testimony, counseling,   index testing, tracing defaulters and other related duties like escorting referral and linkages.  In performing their roles, during this year, peer educators traced 1018 clients who lost to follow their treatment (LTF). The defaulter cases decreased as many strategies deployed to ensure good retention to all new registered clients. Among the strategies were, the new clients are given peer supporter   who made daily communication and immediate tracing at the end of clinic hours.

The implementation of this project accompanied by day to day supportive supervision at care and treatments centers as well as semiannual peer educators meetings that bring together all peers and representative of health care providers to share their progress and proposing new working strategies for the coming year
