About Us
Zanzibar Association of People Living with HIV and AIDS (ZAPHA+) was established in Zanzibar as a national network for, by and with People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in Zanzibar in the year 1994 and registered in 1996. Currently ZAPHA+ has nearly 3000 members in the Islands of Unguja and Pemba.
ZAPHA+ is the only countrywide PLHIV network organization in Zanzibar and is dedicated to supporting, empowering, and raising the voices of those infected and affected by HIV. ZAPHA+ has grown into an internationally recognized community-based development partner that is organized, led, and managed by and for PLHIV. The NGO has two offices in Unguja and Pemba, and its membership extends to all eleven districts of Zanzibar.
ZAPHA+ provides services for its members, including youth, children, and women, and advocates for the rights and welfare of all people infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS. The network also has a cadre of trained counselors and peer educators who work in fields such as home-based-care (HBC), HIV treatment adherence counseling and provision of psychosocial support. ZAPHA+ also advocates for the rights of PLHIV with an emphasis on those left behind and those who are disproportionately at increased risk for HIV and its impact.
